T.N. Governor calls for promoting Tamil language

Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Thursday called for initiatives to propagate Tamil language across the world.

Speaking at a launch of publication ‘U.Ve.Swaminatha Iyer Kaditha Karuvoolam’ at a function organised by the University of Madras, Mr. Purohit said he was a great admirer of the Tamil language and supported all the scholars who wanted to establish chairs for Tamil language in universities across the world. Pointing to the contribution of U.Ve. Swaminatha Iyer to the language, Mr. Purohit said the scholar was remembered with pride and reverence by the Tamil people. Vellore Institute of Technology Founder and Chancellor G. Viswanathan received the first copy of the book from the Governor and stressed the need for policy initiatives by the Central and State government to promote Tamil.

U.Ve.Swaminatha Iyer published over 100 books and had, in his collection, over 3,000 letters. These letters were a means of communication between the great scholar and others. The book, which is a collection of 700 letters, was edited by A.R.Venkatachalapathy of the Madras Institute of Development Studies.
