Thief slashes SI’s arm

A gang member involved in snatching mobile phones and chains slashed the arm of a Sub-Inspector attached to the Royapuram police station when the latter tried to apprehend the gang during night rounds on Friday.

Police said that Sub-Inspector Selvakumar along with other personnel were assigned to nab those involved in snatching mobile phones and chains at Washermenpet.

On duty near Cemetry Road, they spotted four inebriated persons in an autorickshaw fighting amongst themselves.

The police team blocked the autorickshaw and Selvakumar nabbed the main suspect Dayalan when he tried to flee.

Selvakumar realised that Dayalan had slashed his arm only after reaching the police station.

He was treated at a private hospital. Police suspect that Dayalan, 25, was involved in more than 100 mobile phone snatching cases in the city.

His associates were Vinodh, 24, Siva, 23 and Sugumar, 22.
