Three injured in slab collapse

Three people living on the ground floor of a building in Seawood were injured on Wednesday after the ceiling and floor of the flat above them fell onto them.

The incident happened around 5 p.m. at Swapna Saakar Housing Society at Sector 23 in Darave. The injured, Anusaya Chavan (60) and her children Sumiti (34) and Pritam (40), live on the ground floor of the B wing of the society. The ceiling of the first-storey flat, belonging to Vitthal Mhatre, collapsed, causing the floor of the flat to cave in as well. The debris fell on the ground floor.

“The ceiling of Mr. Mhatre’s flat was being repaired. On Wednesday, the flat was locked, when the bedroom ceiling fell. Fortunately, residents of the flat above were in another room and were unharmed,” Krishna Nanware, secretary of the society, said.

The A wing of the society has three floors with 10 households. The two-storey B wing houses six families. After the incident, both wings were evacuated and the residents were shifted to a transit home by the NMMC.

“Our society was not declared dangerous by the civic body. We have been trying to redevelop the society, and have met civic officials many times to seek help. But no one helped us. And now all of them are visiting us. The gutters outside our society have been lying uncovered, but since officers were visiting us today, the gutters were covered,” Mr. Nanware said.

Dadasaheb Chabukswar, Deputy Municipal Commissioner, Estate Department, said, “The building got an occupancy certificate in 2003 and had a life of 15 years. The residents had the structure audited last year. We have sought the report.”

The injured were initially taken to DY Patil Hospital and have now been shifted to Bombay Hospital.
