Tirunelveli will soon get a Rs. 200-crore food park

The Department of Agro Business, with the Union Government’s assistance through NABARD Consultancy Services, will establish an agro-based food park and the infrastructure required for producing value-added food products at Gangaikondan Industrial Promotion Centre on an outlay of Rs. 200 crore, Collector Shilpa Prabhakar Satish said.

Addressing a function held here on Tuesday for felicitating three entrepreneurs who have started their business ventures with the guidance of District Industries Centre, Ms. Shilpa said Tamil Nadu, which is the most sought-after investment destination, is housing 54 of the 500 major industries of the country. With industry-friendly infrastructure including express highways, quality power, skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled manpower, port and air connectivity etc., the State was attracting hefty investments in automobile, leather and textile industries.

Since Tamil Nadu has introduced online single-window licensing system with a deadline, it has further augmented investor-friendly environment in Tamil Nadu, she pointed out.

In this line, the Department of Agro Business was keen on creating the food park at Gangaikondan Industrial Promotion Centre since agriculture is the predominant profession in the district.

As agricultural production was also encouraging, agriculture-based value added products and food processing would be a sure hit in the region, she added.

“Those who are willing to make use of the infrastructure to be created in the proposed food park will get attractive incentives and subsidies,” Ms. Shilpa said.

President of Tirunelveli District Chamber of Commerce and Industry and renowned industrialist Gunasingh Chelladurai, secretary Janardhanan and General Manager of District Industries Centre Murugesh were present.
