Traffic curbs on Ghat Road; holiday for schools

The district administration has imposed travel restrictions on the Ghat Road to Wayanad from Thursday as the earth has caved in en route at many places.

District Collector U.V. Jose said on Wednesday that ordinary buses which had daily permit, including those operated by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation, could continue services. However, tourist buses and goods vehicles would not be allowed to pass via the Ghat Road until further notice.

The District Collector has also declared Thursday as a closed day for all educational institutions, except professional colleges. All the madrasas affiliated to the Samastha Kerala Islam Religious Education Board will also remain closed.

People have been asked to avoid going closer to the Kakkayam dam as the shutters have been opened in view of the rise in waterlevels. Landslip warning has been issued to people staying in the hilly areas.

Steps to set up rehabilitation camps in taluks are in full swing. Tourists have been cautioned against venturing into the sea on beaches in the district.
