Training programme for public librarians under way

A week-long capacity building programme of National Mission on Libraries for public library personnel is under way at the Pondicherry University.

Organised by the Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation (RRRLF) in collaboration with Ananda Rangapillai Library, Pondicherry University, the five-day event will feature lectures on innovative library services, professional competencies and interpersonal skills for public librarians, community based information services and basic ICT skills for day-to-day functions in public libraries, library services for specially-abled users.

The programme will also focus on the use of social media to “reach the unreached”, preservation and conservation of resources in public libraries and hands-on training on KOHA (Library Management Open Source Software).

Arun Kumar Chakraborty, director general, RRRLF and additional mission director, National Mission on Libraries (NML) under the Ministry of Culture, inaugurated the event.

Prof. Gurmeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Pondicherry University, presided. R. Samyuktha, University Librarian, and (Member of the Pondicherry State-level Committee for Modernisation of Roman Rolland Public Library), also participated.

Capacity building training is been given to about 50 participants from Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry over the next few days. According to a Pondicherry University press note, the NML had formulated a scheme consisting of four components such as creation of National Virtual Library of India (NVLI), setting up of NML Model Libraries, quantitative and qualitative survey of libraries and capacity building programme to enhance the professional competence of library personnel.

NML has already taken an initiative to provide need-based training programmes for various categories of library professionals working in public and other libraries towards their capacity building and help promote upgradation of library service standards in the digital era.

The RRRLF, the nodal agency for administrative, logistics, planning and budgeting purposes under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, has been tasked with carrying out capacity building training programmes for the public library personnel throughout the country. Among the 23 such programmes conducted in the last two years, the event at Pondicherry University is fourth in line in this financial year.
