Two dead in Bankura due to heavy rain

Two people died and at least 2,500 were affected as several areas of Bankura district were flooded due to heavy rain on Monday. Many houses were also damaged.

“On Saturday, Bankura received 224 mm of rainfall as a result of which the Gandheswari river started overflowing and several areas under the Bankuramunicipality, the Mejia block and parts of Sonamukhi town got waterlogged. About 2,500 people were affected,” a senior district official told

He said two persons died on Monday. While Gunomoy Bhandari of Nagardanga village under the Mejia block died due to drowning, Sampa Midya of Kuntalbazar village under the Kotalpur block died after being struck by lightning.

Relief camps

Two relief camps have been set up and 610 persons have been provided shelter there. Sixteen medical teams and 35 Civil Defence personnel have been deployed in the affected areas.

The official said Mejia and Sonamukhi get flooded every monsoon but the flood-like situation in the Bankura municipality was rather unexpected.

He said the Bankura municipality is the worst affected among the waterlogged areas. “Rescue work is in full swing and most of the stranded persons have been taken to safer places,” the official said.

District officials said 52 houses, including a two-storey building, were destroyed in the flood while 663 houses were partially damaged.
