‘She was a victim of domestic violence’

The family and friends of the 39-year-old flight attendant who allegedly committed suicide in south Delhi’s Panchsheel Park on July 13 have claimed she was a victim of domestic violence.

Dowry death case

A case of dowry death has been registered at Hauz Khas police station in connection with the incident.

The first information report states that Anissia Batra’s husband Mayank assaulted her on regular basis and that he had failed to tell her he was married earlier.

“Anissia had called me on the third day of her marriage saying Mayank had assaulted her during their honeymoon. We counselled her and things went back to normal for a few days. However, Mayank started assaulting her a week later,” Anissia’s mother Nellum Batra stated in her statement to the police.

Ms. Batra alleged that Mayank had assaulted her too when she tried to mediate between the couple.

Anissia’s friends said she had messaged them hours before the July 13 incident saying Mayank had locked her in a room in their Panchsheel Park residence.

“Anissia sent another message after that one saying she was going to commit suicide. We heard about her death moments later,” said a friend, on condition of anonymity.

A senior police officer said another post-mortem can be conducted if the family wants. Mayank works with a multinational company in Gurugram. The in-laws too have been called for questioning. Preliminary investigation has revealed that it is a case of suicide, the police said, adding that they will determine the role played by each family member in the incident.

SDM enquiry

A Sub-Divisional Magistrate enquiry has been initiated since Anissia and Mayank were married for just two years.
