Villagers stage protest

As many as 184 villagers, including 50 school children, were removed by the police after they staged a sit-in-protest against the opening of government sand quarry at Mohanur here on Wednesday.

Despite opposition from the villagers, the quarry was opened along the River Cauvery at Kunnipalayam village in Manapalli panchayat on Wednesday. Villagers said that if the quarry functioned, it would affect the ground water level in all the villagers in the area causing acute water shortage. They also said that lorries that transport sand would cause accidents in the villages. However, despite our representation, the quarry was opened, they added. A team led by Namakkal DSP Rajendran and Paramathy Velur DSP Raj held talks with the protesters. However, they refused to withdraw their protest. Later, the police removed them.
