Water was released into Kalingarayan Canal for raising first crop in its ayacut of 15,743 acres on Thursday.

Collector S. Prabhakar, MLAs K.V. Ramalingam (Erode West), K.S. Thennarasu (Erode East) and V.P. Sivasubramani (Modakurichi) opened the sluices at Kalingarayan Anicut in Bhavani. Water will be released into the canal till November 15 for a period of 120 days with stoppage of water for 40 days. Farmers have been asked to use the water judiciously.

Executive Engineer (Lower Bhavani Division) V. Damodaran, Assistant Executive Engineer S. Senthil Kumar and Junior Engineer Karthikeyan were present.

The farmers association has requested the district administration to clean and remove the plastic waste materials dumped in the canal and its sub-canal so that water reaches the tail-end farmers without delay. The farmers have also urged the administration to prevent the discharge of industrial effluents into the canal.

Meanwhile, a proposal has been submitted by the district administration for release of water from Bhavani Sagar reservoir to Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) canal on July 22.

As the water level is 93 feet and the storage around 23 tmc, the farmers demand release of water for cultivation at the earliest. Officials said that an announcement regarding the date of water release was expected in a few days.
