Two women were arrested on June 27 for allegedly stealing jewellery from a house in Vivek Vihar by posing as domestic helps, the police said on Monday. The police have recovered jewellery worth lakhs of rupees.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Nupur Prasad said the women were arrested five days after a complaint was lodged on June 23 by a member of the Ahuja family, which resides in Vivek Vihar’s D Block.
The complainant told the police that two women, who identified themselves as Pooja and Preeti, approached his building’s guard and said they were looking for work. The guard then made them meet the complainant’s wife.
“They had come around 7.30 a.m. The woman [complainant’s wife] told them to come at 10 a.m. and start working. They came around 9 a.m. and left around 11 a.m. They said they worked at other places as well,” Ms. Prasad said.
Later when the complainant’s wife checked her locker she realised that her jewellery were missing. The family then approached the police, after which a case was registered and an investigation was taken up.
Ms. Prasad said that the CCTV footage near the house was obtained that showed the women taking an autorickshaw. The auto driver was identified and questioned. “He said that he dropped them at Dhaula Kuan. CCTV footage of the area showed that the women took another auto from there. The second auto driver revealed that he had dropped them near Delhi Cantonment flyover,” she said.
The accused’s movement was then traced and they were arrested from Nangal Rai.
During interrogation, they told the police that they had committed such thefts in the past as well with the same modus operandi.
