Isha Foundation plans more nurseries to raise saplings of trees

Isha Foundation plans to set up 350 more nurseries to raise saplings of trees for the ‘Cauvery Calling Movement’ through which it plans to plant 242 crore saplings in the Cauvery basin.

Disclosing this at the Foundation’s nursery at Sooriyampatti near here on Saturday, Isha Foundation founder Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev said the saplings raised at these nurseries were the only ones without nematode accumulations on the roots which reduced survival rate of the saplings. They would be raised in large numbers and organically too.

He renamed the Sooriyampatti nursery as Mahatma Gandhi Green India Mission nursery before proceeding with his motorcycle rally to Tiruvarur.

Earlier, addressing a meeting here on Friday night, he said about 10,000 farmers would be trained in ‘where to grow and how to grow’ the saplings. The motorcycle rally had reached more than 6,500 villages and delivered the Cauvery Calling message to over 2.70 lakh farmers in the Cauvery belt in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

If economic benefits of agro-forestry could be demonstrated by 250 to 500 farmers in every taluk, the model would spread on its own, he added.

On Saturday, the Isha Foundation founder reached Tiruvarur where he had interaction with farmers.

Calling upon the farmers to grow trees along with crop cultivation, he said this tropical nation was full of trees once. Now that the population had increased, crop cultivation assumed more importance but it should be done along with growing trees, he added.
