1.73 lakh cusecs discharged from Basavasagar reservoir

Following the high quantum of water being discharged from the Basava Sagar reservoir in Narayanapur in Hunsagi taluk in Yadgir district, three islands, Kadadaragaddi, Yalagaddi and Mydaragaddi, were cut off and a bridge near Shilahalli in Lingsugur taluk in Raichur district was submerged with the Krishna in spate on Friday. As many as 16 families on these three islands have been stranded.

Talking to The Hindu, Bagadi Gautham, Deputy Commissioner, said that officials of Revenue and Police have been deployed near Shilahalli bridge.

A rubber boat was also made available to reach the island residents.

Officials are also going to keep in contact with residents and shift them to mainland by boat if the water level in the Krishna increases, he added. According to official sources, Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigama Limited (KBJNL) discharged 1.73 lakh cusecs of water from Basavasagar reservoir on Thursday night.

Dr. Gautham, who visited the affected areas with other officials, said that a requisition has been made to the Uttara Kannada district administration to send another boat and it is expected to arrive on Saturday. Officials of Health and Family Welfare Department and medical officers of nearby health centres have been asked to keep all medical facilities ready.
