The five-day event will be inaugurated on May 17
Superintendent of Police, The Nilgiris, D. Shanmuga Priya on Wednesday reviewed the preparations under way to accommodate the visitors to the district during the annual flower show to be inaugurated on May 17 (Friday).
Ms. Shanmuga Priya told presspersons at Charring Cross in Udhagamandalam town that “visible policing” will be one of the key strategies employed to ensure smooth flow of traffic across the district, prevent crimes, and ensure crowd control during the five-day-long 123rd Flower Show.
She said ensuring that police personnel were visible to drivers at pre-determined intervals all the way from Mettupalayam to Coonoor and Udhagamandalam, since the start of the year, had resulted in almost zero fatal accidents.
“More than 1,100 police personnel, including battalions from the Tamil Nadu Special Police, additional local units, women units, and traffic units will be pressed into service,” Ms. Shanmuga Priya said.
The police have also made the traffic flow in the district “one-way” with vehicles from Mettupalayam ascending to Udhagamandalam via Coonoor, while descending vehicles headed to Coimbatore being diverted via Kotagiri.
Vigilance will be stepped up to prevent pocket-picking, chain-snatching and thefts from parked cars and vehicles throughout the summer festival, the SP added.
Five drone cameras are also to be used from May 16 to May 22 in Udhagamandalam.
“We appeal to all tourists and local residents to extend their full cooperation to ensure that the summer festival is held successfully,” said Ms. Shanmuga Priya.
