Two boys, aged 10 and 19, drowned in a water-filled trench situated next to a canal under construction, reportedly meant for the Sitarama Lift Irrigation Project at Jinkalagudem village of Burgampadu mandal on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Ganta Bhargav, a class V student, and D Sudheer, a student of a Burgampadu-based Industrial Training Institute. Both hailed from Morampalli Banjara village of the same mandal. Sources said Bhargav accidentally fell into the large ditch, which was filled with rainwater to the brim, while walking along the periphery of an agriculture field of his relative at Jinkalagudem in the afternoon. Sudheer, who was behind him, rushed to the rescue of Bhargav. He tried to pull the boy out of the trench, but, in the process, both drowned, sources said. Their bodies were recovered from late in the afternoon. Poignant scenes were witnessed at Jinkalagudem with the bereaved family members wailing inconsolably at the spot.
In a separate incident in Khammam district, a construction worker was feared drowned in the Munneru stream at Teerthala village of Khammam rural mandal in the early hours of the day.
The missing person was identified as Nagaiah of Ramannapeta. He could not be traced till late in the evening.
