Indian sprinter Dutee Chand and England cricketer Ben Stokes are two names from the world of sport to have been included in the Time 100 Next list – a list of ‘rising stars who are shaping the future of business, entertainment, sports, politics, science, health’ around the world.
On Dutee Chand’s inclusion in the list, Time said, “In July, she became the first Indian sprinter to win the 100-m at the World University Games. But back in 2014, Chand was effectively banned from competition because of her high natural testosterone levels; she appealed the verdict and won a precedent-setting case.”

“This year, Chand announced she was in a same-sex relationship, making her the first openly gay athlete in India’s history. For a country that decriminalized homosexuality just a year ago, Chand’s revelation was a notable step forward,” it added.
Those included in the Time 100 Next list are described by the publication as those who “are driven by hope…They are eager to defy the odds – and fight for a better future.”

The 100 people included in this year’s list are those who have done something extraordinary under exceptional circumstances in various fields.
The summer of 2019 has often been referred to as ‘Stokes’s summer’ because of his heroics with the England cricket team – first in the World Cup and then in the Ashes series.
Dutee Chand has always been a pathbreaker in her field. This year, she announced herself to be in a same-sex relationship, making her the first openly gay athlete in the country’s sporting history.
American tennis player Coco Gauff and gymnast Aly Raisman are also part of the Time 100 Next list.
