M. Boopathi Vaishnav Kumar of Dindigul, who emerged as the first triple centurion in the P.R. Thevar Trophy inter-district cricket tournament, was lost for words to describe his feat.
Boopathi, a class XI student of SMBM Matriculation Higher Secondary School here, scored a mammoth 328 against Villupuram in the pre-quarterfinals on Sunday.
He said taking the first-innings lead to put Dindigul in a strong position was his primary aim. “There was pressure when we were at 140 for five and still short of 55 runs to secure the first-innings lead. But, after crossing that mark, I gained confidence,” said Boopathi, who was involved in two fruitful partnerships —116 for the sixth wicket with S. Sanjay Ragavendraa and 99 for the seventh wicket with J.R. Rithick Jagadesh.
Boopathi admitted that he did feel “a bit nervous” when he was inching towards triple century. “But, I managed to keep a cool head and achieved the landmark.”
He had had a rollicking start to the season, scoring a double century against Thoothukudi in the first stage of the tournament earlier this month, and is confident of sustaining the momentum.
