Avengers: Infinity War nearly had a Sherlock joke between Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Downey Jr

Avengers: Infinity War almost had a Sherlock joke – but was cut because it was too “obvious”.

Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange) and Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man) shared a number of scenes together in the Marvel blockbuster. They are, of course, known for playing the famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes (Cumberbatch on the BBC series, Downey Jr in two movies).

And the Russo brothers Anthony and Joe, who directed the movie, considered including a line that referenced this near the beginning.

The reference would have been featured in the scene where Doctor Strange and Iron Man meet for the first time.

“I should’ve said, ‘No shit, Sherlock’,” they said, on the commentary for the digital download release (via The Hollywood Reporter). “Everyone really wanted that joke.

“It is also a very obvious joke. Not that we can’t be accused of having made obvious jokes before.”

Two Thanos-related deleted scenes for Avengers: Infinity War were released recently. One showed a heart-to-heart between Thanos and Gamora (Zoe Saldana), while the other focused on the Guardians after Gamora was snatched from Knowhere by the Big Bad.

The home release also answered another long-standing question: why did the Hulk refuse to fight?

Avengers: Infinity War will be released as a digital download on August 20 and on DVD and Blu-ray on September 3.
